La Cruz Habitat Protection Project – Mexico is a cooperative reforestation program directed and operated by Jose Luis Alvarez. This project carries out the field work of growing and distributing the trees, consulting with the participants, monitoring the results and interviewing new participants.

The Cruz Habitat Protection Project, A.C. is a Mexican not-for-profit organization that owns land on which a demonstration forest is being grown for use as an educational resource.

 

Ejidos, communities, and individuals in rural Mexico plant and care for the trees they receive through our project.

 

Local Community Leaders coordinate and oversee the distribution of trees in their communities.

Important Funding Partners include October Hill Foundation, American Forests, Greater Good Foundation and a variety of small foundations and individuals.

Spirit of Butterflies is a personal tour company that arranges for small groups to visit the nursery, and areas of deforestation and reforested sites, as well as the reserves where millions of monarchs overwinter. They contribute a percentage of their fees to the project.


2010 Accomplishments

  • Planted 673,040 Trees
  • Published a Planting Guide in Spanish
  • Passed Landmark of 5,000,000 Trees Planted
  • Initiated Disaster Relief Effort in Monarch Area
